Carlos A. RivaPresident and Chief Executive Officer Carlos Riva became President, Chief Executive Officer and Director of Verenium in June 2007, after the merger of Diversa Corporation and Celunol Corporation closed. Mr. Riva joined Celunol, a privately held developer of cellulosic ethanol process technology, as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer in 2006. Prior to joining Celunol, from 2003 to 2005, Mr. Riva served as Executive Director of Amec plc, a major global construction and engineering company based in the United Kingdom, where he was responsible for the company’s operations in the United States and Britain and for Amec’s global oil and gas business strategy. From 1995 to 2003, Mr. Riva served as Chief Executive Officer of InterGen, a Boston-based joint venture between Shell and Bechtel that developed more than 18,000 megawatts of electric generating capacity, along with gas storage and pipelines, on six continents. Under his leadership, InterGen raised $9 billion of non-recourse project financing to construct power projects and grew from a development company concept to a successful, global operating business. From 1992 to 1994 Mr. Riva was President and Chief Operating Officer of Boston-based J. Makowski Company, which developed the first independent power project in the United States. Mr. Riva earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Civil Engineering from the M.I.T. and Stanford University respectively, and an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School. 
Jeffrey G. BlackSenior Vice President, Chief Accounting Officer Jeff Black became Vice President and Chief Accounting Officer in June 2007, after the merger of Diversa Corporation and Celunol Corporation closed. Mr. Black joined Diversa in 2005 as Chief Accounting Officer. Mr. Black has more than 17 years in financial management and advisory roles and has served in senior level financial management roles for six publicly-traded companies. Mr. Black's experience includes serving as Executive Director of Accounting and Corporate Controller of Isis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Principal and Interim Financial Executive of Regent Pacific Management Corporation, a financial advisory firm through which he served as Vice President of Finance and Corporate Controller of Clarent Corporation and Vice President and Corporate Controller of Accelerated Networks, Inc. Mr. Black is a certified public accountant and began his career with Ernst & Young LLP. Mr. Black graduated with a bachelor's degree in business from the University of Arizona in 1991. 
William H. BaumExecutive Vice President, Business Development William Baum became Executive Vice President of Business Development in June 2007, after the merger of Diversa Corporation and Celunol Corporation. Mr. Baum joined Diversa in 1997 as Vice President, Sales and Marketing, and was promoted to Senior Vice President, Business Development in November 1999 and to Executive Vice President, Chemical, Agriculture, and Industrial Enzymes Business in July 2002. From July 1993 to August 1997 Mr. Baum was Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing with International Specialty Products, a specialty chemical company. Prior to joining International Specialty, he was with Betz Laboratories, also a specialty chemical company, for 20 years in a variety of international and domestic executive management positions, including Executive Vice President of European Operations and as Managing Director of Betz GmbH. Mr. Baum also serves as a director for Genomatica, a private biotechnology company and serves on the Industrial and Environmental Governing Board of BIO. Mr. Baum received a B.S. from Widener University. 
Gerald M. Haines IIExecutive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer Gerald Haines joined Verenium in January 2007 as Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer, and Secretary. Prior to joining Verenium, Mr. Haines spent more than a decade in senior executive roles at NYSE and NASDAQ-traded public companies, serving most recently as EVP of Strategic Affairs and Chief Legal Officer of Enterasys Networks. At Enterasys, he led the company through a successful public-to-private buyout transaction after participating in a business turnaround that led the company back to growth and profitability. Prior to that he was Vice President and General Counsel of Cabletron, the largest manufacturer of oriented polypropylene packaging films in North America, and before that was in private practice as a corporate attorney in a large Boston law firm. He has deep experience with M&A transactions, IPOs and spin-offs, IP portfolio management, corporate and business development, corporate governance, and a full range corporate and commercial negotiations and agreements. Mr. Haines is a member of the Bar in Massachusetts, Maine, and the Federal District of Massachusetts, and is also a director of the New England Corporate Counsel Association and a member of ACC – the Association for Corporate Counsel. Mr. Haines received his law degree from Cornell Law School, and holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, magna cum laude, from Boston University. 
John B. HoweVice President, Public Affairs John Howe became Vice President of Public Affairs in June 2007, after the merger of Diversa Corporation and Celunol Corporation. Mr. Howe joined Celunol in 2006. Prior to Celunol, Mr. Howe was Vice President, Electric Industry Affairs at American Superconductor, a leading developer of innovative power grid technologies. From 1995 to 1997 he served as Chairman of the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities, where he spearheaded early stages of the state's energy restructuring process. Previously he was Vice President, Regulatory and Government Affairs for J. Makowski Associates Inc. and U.S. Generating Company, two leading independent power developers. Mr. Howe has held leadership roles in several energy-related organizations including: the Coalition for the Commercial Application of Superconductors; the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners; and several independent power organizations. Mr. Howe holds degrees from Amherst College and the Fletcher School at Tufts University. 
Nell JonesSenior Vice President, Human Resources Nell Jones joined Verenium in July 2007, as Senior Vice President of Human Resources. Prior to joining Verenium Ms. Jones was with Cambridge Energy Research Associates (CERA), a premier global advisory firm focusing on energy markets, where she served as Vice President, Human Resources and Operations. Before CERA, she held several senior human resources positions including the position of Corporate Vice President, Human Resources at Bolt Beranek and Newman, Inc., a diversified research and development technology firm, where she was responsible for a human resource organization in support of 3,000 employees worldwide. Ms. Jones holds a degree from the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, MA and is a member of the college’s Board of Trustees. 
James (Jamie) E. LevineExecutive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer 
Gregory Powers, Ph.D.Executive Vice President, Research and Development Greg Powers joined Verenium in October 2008, as Executive Vice President Prior to joining Verenium, Dr. Powers was Vice President of Global Engineering
at United Technologies Corporation's Carrier Division, where he was responsible
for all engineering activity and strategy development supporting core innovation
for the company. Previously, Dr. Powers held various positions with General Electric
Company including specialty materials, lighting and plastics. He was Global
Technology Director for GL Betz where he led product and process development for
a $1B global water and process treatment chemicals and services business.
Prior to that, he worked as Global General Manager of Technology creating high
tech product offerings and manufacturing process and as Global Technology
Manager for GE Plastics, Structured Products. 
Janet RoemerExecutive Vice President, Specialty Enzymes Business Unit Janet Roemer joined Verenium in March 2008, as Executive Vice President of the Specialty Enzymes Business Unit. Prior to joining Verenium, Ms. Roemer held several positions with BP Group, a $285 billion energy company and one of the world's largest oil and gas companies. Most recently, she was Chief of Staff to the CEO of Innovene, a former division of BP Group. Innovene was a $24 billion petrochemical and refining business within BP Group, producing olefin monomers and polymers, solvents, nitrile-based chemicals, and a range of specialty hydrocarbons. Prior to that, Ms. Roemer served as the chief executive of a $1.7 billion North American chemical business, for which she had P&L accountability. In this role, she led a team including leaders of technology, human resources, financial control, manufacturing, sales, strategy, procurement and projects. Before that, Ms. Roemer held positions as Vice President of Digital Business and General Manager for a $700 million global chemical business. Ms. Roemer also held various positions at Amoco Corporation between 1983 and 1999. She was working as an Industry Manager with responsibility for global sales and marketing for a high growth product line, when the merger with BP was announced in 1999. She began her career at National Starch and Chemical in 1979. Ms. Roemer received a M.B.A. degree from the University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois, and a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. 
J. Chris TerajewiczSenior Vice President, Engineering and Construction Chris Terajewicz joined Verenium in November 2007 as Senior Vice President of Engineering and Construction. Prior to joining Verenium, Mr. Terajewicz was with the Shaw Group where was responsible for engineering and construction of Air Quality Control Projects. Previously, he was the Senior Vice President for InterGen, an international IPP Developer. In his capacity Mr. Terajewicz had worldwide responsibility for Engineering, Construction, plant operations where he oversaw the design, build out and operations and maintenance of over 15 power generation facilities in 10 countries. Prior to InterGen he was Vice President of Operations at J. Makowski Associates, a Boston based energy developer. Mr. Terajewicz began his career with General Electric where he was deployed on numerous international energy projects in engineering and project management capacities. Mr. Terajewicz holds a Bachelor of Engineering, Marine Engineering degree from SUNY Maritime College, is a Professional Engineer, and is a graduate of the Advanced Management Program (AMP) from the Harvard Business School. |
